Nicole McCrossin grew up in the stunning wild environs of the northern West Coast, where she developed a passion for exploring the links between the environment, people and identity. After returning from a year-long exchange to Peru at the age of 17, she enrolled at the University of Otago, emerging five years later with a BA(Hons) in Anthropology and a BSc in Geography, along with another stint on exchange in Mexico. She headed north to Wellington where she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies. Dunedin called again, however, along with the desire to focus on the issues of development, culture and sustainability closer at hand here in Aotearoa. To this end, CSAFE seemed a natural home, and Nicole is now based there studying towards an MA in Indigenous Studies. Her research is contributing to the Marsden-funded project ‘Tirohia he Huarahi.’ She is looking at the intentions behind the policy developed in the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Fisheries Act 1996 which enables Māori to become more fully engaged with the management of their traditional resources.
