Sophal Chhun is working on his PhD, researching how ecosystem service approaches and choice modeling with regards to environmental valuation can help integrate customary management areas and marine reserves into New Zealand?s quota management system. His main supervisor at CSAFE is Professor Henrik Moller. Sophal is also working with Dr. Viktoria Kahui and Dr. Paul Thorsnes of the Department of Economics.

Sophal received a bachelor's degree in Forestry Science from the Royal University of Agriculture in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), as well as a graduate diploma and master's degree in Environmental Management & Development from the Australian National University in Canberra.

Sophal had experience working in the Ministry of Environment in Cambodia for more than seven years. He was the Chief of Project Monitoring Office in the Department of Environmental Impact Assessment and a member of the Legal, Environmental, Economic, Social & Cultural Advisory Group (Think Tank) for Cambodia's Minister of the Environment. He was actively involved with several collaborative projects at the ministry, such as the UNOPS-GEF funded project, ?Supporting Country Action on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Programme of Work on Protected Areas?; the World Bank funded project, ?Strengthening Environmental Management Capacity at the Local Level in Cambodia?; and the project, ?EU-Asia Institutional Co-operation and Multinational Dialogue on Enabling the Meaningful Participation of Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).? Sophal also had experience working as a consultant and collaborator with international and national organisations, such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Oxfam America (OA), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Fauna and Flora International (FFI), American Friends Service Committee (ASC), China Appraisal Centre for Environment and Engineering (ACEE), and Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP).

Sophal's research interests include impact assessment, environmental policy analysis, and economic valuation of the environment. He is keen to explore how a resource-use policy might and should be changed if environmental impacts and the value of such impacts are taken into account in decision-making. He also collaborates with other research networks such as the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and the Cambodian Environmental Association (CEA).
