Dr. Charlotte Chambers
Abstract
In this talk, Dr. Chambers will present the findings of her PhD research which investigated the practices and politics of conservation in the context of giant clam management in the atoll environment of Tongareva, northern Cook Islands.
Theoretically, the work was located in political ecology/nature-society studies and methodologically drew upon a diverse range of approaches including policy review and key player interviews, the tracing of exchange networks, participant-observation and in-situ interviews about local management practices, and a scientifically-based ecological survey of the lagoon’s clam stocks.
About the Speaker
Dr. Chambers completed her PhD in human geography at the University of Edinburgh in 2007 and currently works as a lecturer in the Geography department at the University of Otago.
Dr. Chamber's research interests lie in the general area of society-environment relations with a specific emphasis on the politics of environmental and resource management. Previous research has examined visualizing technologies, human-animal relations and politics of biodiversity conservation in Scotland and New Zealand.

SAC Meetings are a CSAFE organised seminar series that meets fortnightly aimed at stimulating discussion and debate on issues relating to natural resource management. The 2008 series combines the Te Hao Mātaurangaans and Sustainable Agriculture Colloquium and the series will focus on topics relating to sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship and traditional ecological knowledge.
With speakers coming from backgrounds as diverse as design, history, agribusiness and education we look forward to some lively discussion and informal debate.
As always, the discussion will be helped along by glasses of wine and snacks, so come along – we’d love to hear your opinion on the issues and challenges and research that will be presented.
All welcome—please circulate this invitation to friends and colleagues.
