Abstract

Linda Bye will present her ongoing research project on young rural men and masculinity construction in Norway. Giving insights into the life experiences of a group of men who have grown up in and who have settled in a remote farm-based community in Mid-Norway, she focuses on how young rural men shape and are shaped by normative codes of rural masculinity and place, and in turn how young men negotiate hegemonic understandings of rural masculinity. The aim of her study is to consider how young men can be ‘as men’ in a ‘hunting community’ in rural Norway.

About the Speaker

Linda works as a researcher at the Department of Geography, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. Her research interests are related to social and cultural geography, and in particular people and place relationships and the intertwining of rurality and gender. She started to work with gender issues at the Norwegian Centre for Rural Research, in Trondheim in 1996, were she did an in-depth interview study of farmwomen’s everyday life experiences. Later on she have moved on into research on men, masculinity and rurality, and in particular issues related to hunting.
